Perfecting Your Virtual Interview
Video interviews are the norm in today’s tech-centric world. Just as you would prepare for an in-person interview, it’s just as important to prepare for a virtual interview. Here are some tips (and tricks) to ensure you ace your video interview.
- If you don’t have the platform the interview will be held on (Zoom, Teams, etc.), download it.
- Familiarize yourself with the program so you can easily navigate and troubleshoot if needed.
- Get your (quiet) location for the interview ready. Remember your background/surroundings will be visible. Often the virtual platform will give you options to change your background.
- Conduct a trial run with friends to become more comfortable and check your internet connection, audio, video, lighting, and background.
Before the Interview
- Position the camera at eye level to avoid any uncomfortable angles. Ensure the camera is on (often there is a sliding button on the top of the screen).
- Identify and mitigate any potential interruptions. Let everyone know ahead of time that you will be interviewing (partners, spouses, roommates).
- Close all open tabs and programs on your computer except for the video platform you will be using.
- Turn off your phone and any alerts on your computer to avoid noises or messages popping up and distracting you.
- Dress the part, head to toe, by wearing the same attire you would for an in-person interview (business professional).
- Ensure your clothing works for video. Stick to neutrals, shades of blues, and solids instead of busy patterns.
- Log in at least 10 minutes early to make sure everything is working properly and allow some time for troubleshooting any last-minute glitches. Most platforms have a “test your video and test your microphone” feature – perform both tests.
- Once connected, take a moment to look at the camera settings and adjust the angle and lighting, if needed.
During the Interview
- Introduce yourself and confirm that the interviewer can hear and see you.
- Have your CV and any other documents available you may want to reference.
- Keep pen and paper available to write down any notes or questions during the interview.
- Your body language is just as important as in an in-person interview. Make sure your body language expresses that you are interested and engaged in the conversation, such as:
- Sitting up straight with good posture
- Having an energetic demeanor
- Maintaining eye contact with the interviewer 75% of the time by looking directly at the camera – avoid watching yourself on the screen.
- Be mindful of your speech by articulating your words and not talking too fast or talking over the interviewer(s).
- And finally, stay focused and don’t get distracted.
After the Interview
As with any interview, it’s important to follow up with a “Thank You” email.
